Ancient Egyptian Art Books
By STAN PARCHIN
September 1, 2009

Egyptian, New Kingdom, Dynasty 18 (ca. 1336-1327 B.C.). Coffinette for the Viscera of Tutankhamun. Gold, carnelian, obsidian, rock crystal and glass. L: 39.5 cm (15.6 in.); W: 11 cm (4.3 in.); H: 10 cm (3.9 in.). Egyptian Museum, Cairo. © Andreas F. Voegelin, Antikenmuseum, Basel and Sammlung Ludwig.

In his Histories, the Greek author Herodotus (ca. 484-425 B.C.) called Egypt the "gift of the Nile," an apt description for an arid region's splendid civilization, its cultural efflorescence linked intrinsically to the river's annual inundation. Thousands of years later, the country's sands still yield fascinating information about its ancient history and relation to other civilizations. Its artifacts' interpretations by archaeologists, art historians, linguists and scientists are detailed in scholarly texts and exhibition catalogues, many published by art museums worldwide.
