Andy Warhol: The Last Decade
By STAN PARCHIN
September 2, 2009

Andy Warhol: The Last Decade is the first United States exhibition to cover the American Pop artist's late works through 50 examples dating from 1978 through 1986. Organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum, the show debuts there from September 26, 2009 to January 3, 2010 and then travels to three more venues.

The last decade of Warhol's 40-year career was a time of great vitality and experimentation, a period characterized by new series of paintings in larger numbers and on a grander scale when compared to his previous accomplishments. His late works combined painting by hand, mechanical reproduction, representation and abstraction. The artist also collaborated with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring.

Following an introduction to Andy Warhol's earlier work, the loan exhibition is divided thematically based on important series: abstraction (Shadows and Oxidation Paintings); Collaborations; Black & White Ads; Self-portraits; Camouflage patterns; and The Last Supper.

Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987). The Last Supper (1986). Acrylic and silkscreen on canvas. 198.1 x 777.2 cm (78 x 306 in.). Baltimore Museum of Art. Photograph by Mitro Hood.

The Milwaukee Art Museum presents two related installations. Andy Warhol: Pop Star displays prints from the Marilyn and Mao portfolios as well as works from local collections. Figurative Prints: 1980s Rewind features more than 30 works by Warhol's contemporaries, including Eric Fischl, Susan Rothenberg and Julian Schnabel.

After its appearance at the Milwaukee Art Museum, "Andy Warhol: The Last Decade" travels to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (February 14-May 16, 2010), the Brooklyn Museum (June 18-September 12, 2010) and the Baltimore Museum of Art (October 17, 2010-January 9, 2011).
