The High Museum of Art announced on April 1, 2010 a gift of 47 extraordinary works from prominent collectors Irene and Howard Stein. Most of them were created by major personalities in fin-de-siécle Paris. Artists represented by the prints and drawings given to the High include Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Honoré Daumier and Paul Signac. Sculptures by Pieter Xavery, Martin Desjardins, Charles Cordier and Jules Dalou round out the recent acquisitions.
Among the prized works on paper donated to the museum are prints and posters by Toulouse-Lautrec. Highlights include Miss Loïe Fuller (1893), an image that incorporates powdered gold, and the rare colorful lithograph La Clownesse au Moulin Rouge (1897).
Beginning in January 2011, the special exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec and Friends: The Stein Collection will feature all 47 pieces donated by Mr. and Mrs. Stein in addition to approximately 30 others either given previously to the High or purchased with their financial assistance. On view will be Toulouse-Lautrec's The Elles Series (1896), the artist's lithographic masterpiece that is unbroken and in near perfect condition. It was presented to the museum in 2001.
Michael Shapiro, the High Museum of Art's Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr. Director, said, “This is one of the largest and most significant gifts of works of art in the history of the museum. Over the past two decades, the Steins have been invaluable in helping us to build our collection. This latest gift will greatly strengthen our European sculpture collection and dramatically elevate our holdings of works on paper by Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.”
